The Link Between Mindful Communication and Nonprofit Company Culture

Last year, I presented the importance of mindful communication to a group of consultants. At the time, I was trying to find a way to include communication, a topic I know well, with mindfulness, a topic that I was learning more about at the time. I didn’t realize as I spoke to that group of professionals how valuable the union of those two subjects would be for all of us. Following the presentation, I received many comments from consultants on how they felt that being a mindful communicator would help them with client interactions. While this is true, I also see very clearly how mindful communication can be beneficial internally.

Communication is the connection between each of us – whether it's expressed verbally, physically, or not at all— we say much more than we realize. Practicing mindfulness in any action will always lead to better outcomes, and when we pair it with the act of communication in the workplace, it opens the door for more intentional interactions, and better understanding between colleagues in their interactions. Communicating mindfully can be difficult to do consistently at first. As much as we may want to be mindful in each conversation, it doesn’t always happen. Because we’re human, and it’s ok.

Practicing mindful communication goes beyond being clear with words and actions — it's about being intentional, empathetic, and fully present when in conversation. When communicating with a group — whether among coworkers, bosses, employees, or volunteers — this awareness can go a long way.

Below I am sharing some of the tips from my presentation on how mindful communication in group settings can help.

  • Eases Change: In times of organizational change, mindful communication helps to ease transitions and reduces resistance, ensuring that your company culture remains resilient and adaptive.
